Leadership Development Program
The Leadership Development Program consists of a 26-month “curriculum” that addresses Leadership Competencies, Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Practices. Through seminars (on leadership and emotional intelligence), experiential practices, reflection (on developing leadership competencies) and mentorship Fellows will develop knowledge and skills to be an effective leader.

Leadership Competencies span two perspectives: Leading Self (7 competencies) and Leading Others (6 competencies). Content on these Leadership Competencies has been adapted from work created at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy over the last decade.

Principles of Emotional Intelligence are infused into the AGLP Leadership Development plan. Led by Yale’s Dr. David Caruso and based on his collaboration with Yale’s President Peter Salovey and colleague John H. Mayer, the Emotional Intelligence aspect of the development plan include presentations and discussions on concepts in Emotional Intelligence and the development of one’s skill using an Emotional Blueprint to analyze and respond to critical situations faced by a leader. Readings from the Caruso/Salovey book “The Emotionally Intelligent Manager” as well as other texts are used as references.
The Leadership Competencies and Emotional Intelligence Practices emphasize skills needed for competent leadership. The book “The Leadership Challenge” by James Kouzes & Barry Posner serves as a reference for five essential leadership practices and these practices are also components of the curriculum. Each topic is introduced in a seminar where key elements are discussed, and examples used to build foundational knowledge. Each Fellow then practices this competency or skill during the following month within their academic and home lives as a form of experiential learning. Personal reflections period coincide with the experiential learning activities. Finally, a session dedicated to personal and groups reflections on the experiential learning scenarios reinforce each Fellow’s skills applying each leadership topic. Though not part of the monthly sessions, mentorship by an external professional coach is the final component of the AGLP Leadership Development plan. The four stages of the Leadership Development curriculum are described in the graphic below and the schedule outlines the curriculum sequence. The schedule is an active archive of the curriculum, with the presented links detailing the last presentation on each topic area.
