Faculty Leaves

Information regarding faculty leaves is included in the Faculty Handbook.

For detailed procedures for the academic leave process, please refer to the OFAS Leaves and Teaching Relief website.

Once approved, department administrators (chair’s assistant or equivalent) may refer to this Workday Training Guide to process faculty leaves and returns from leave.

Academic Leaves for Tenured Faculty

Faculty who wish to request a leave during the 2025-2026 academic year should submit a request using the online leave application form. Instructions for submitting your application can be found here

Faculty should submit requests no later than Thursday, October 31, 2024.  

Approvals will be sent from the SEAS Dean’s Office in February-March, 2025. 

Academic Leaves for Tenure-Track Faculty

Assistant Professors who wish to request a pre-tenure leave during the 2025-2026 academic year should please refer to the memo to SEAS tenure-track faculty and department chairs regarding research leave eligibility for tenure-track faculty and the procedures and deadlines for submitting an application.  

Assistant Professors should submit the online leave application form no later than Thursday, October 31, 2024    

  • Faculty should indicate Initial Appointment Leave or Post-Reappointment Leave and attach their CV and the SEAS Junior Faculty Leave Request Form as one document
  • Faculty requesting a lab setup leave should indicate Initial Appointment Leave and note Lab Setup Leave in the Comments.  Additional documenttation is not required for a lab setup leave application.   

Approvals will be sent from the SEAS Dean’s Office in February-March, 2025. 

If you are interested in a leave during the 2024-2025 academic year, please be in touch with your department chair.  

Professional Development Leave for Instructional (non-ladder) Faculty

Information on applications for leaves during the 2025-2026 academic year will be available in October. 

Other Leaves and Time Off
