Vishnoi Named Fellow of the American Mathematical Society
Nisheeth Vishnoi, the A. Bartlett Giamatti Professor of Computer Science, has been named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). The AMS Fellows program honors the excellence of members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics. Fellows are recognized by their peers for their contributions to the profession.
"I am delighted to congratulate the 2025 Class of AMS Fellows, recognized for their outstanding contributions to the mathematical sciences and for their extraordinary service to our profession,” said AMS President Bryna Kra. “This year’s class was selected from a large and excellent pool of candidates, highlighting the many ways that individuals advance our profession. I look forward to working with them in service to our community.”
Vishnoi’s research spans several areas of theoretical computer science, optimization, and machine learning. He is also interested in understanding and addressing some of the key questions that arise in nature and society from a computational viewpoint, including emergence of intelligence and the interface of artificial intelligence, ethics, and society.
He earned a B. Tech. in computer science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1999 and a Ph.D. in algorithms, combinatorics, and optimization from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004. He has since worked in both industrial research labs and academia, most recently at Microsoft Research in India from 2009 to 2014, and then as an associate professor with tenure at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. He joined the Yale faculty as a full professor in the Department of Computer Science in 2019.
Vishnoi is the author of “Algorithms for Convex Optimization” (Cambridge University Press) and, at Yale, he is a co-founder of the Computation and Society Initiative, where researchers from across the university work to address the complications that arise as algorithm- and data-driven technologies permeate and alter various aspects of modern society.
Vishnoi is one of 41 fellows inducted this year. AMS is a professional society advancing research and connecting the diverse global mathematical community through publications, meetings and conferences, MathSciNet, professional services, advocacy and awareness programs.
