Mitchell Smooke Elected to The Combustion Institute

Cited for his pioneering research, Mitchell Smooke, Interim Dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, has been named a 2018 fellow of The Combustion Institute.

Smooke, the Strathcona Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science & Applied Physics, was among a group of researchers from around the world named as new members to the institute. Those chosen are recognized by their peers in the field for outstanding contributions to combustion, whether in research or in applications.

The institute, an international, non-profit, educational and scientific society, noted Smooke’s research on developing numerical and computational procedures to solve problems relating to chemically reacting flows, especially flame structure.

Calling his election to the institute a “great honor,” Smooke said that membership will give him additional opportunities to collaborate with the international community of combustion researchers.

The election to The Combustion Institute is the latest of many honors for Smooke. In recent years, those include the AIAA Propellant & Combustion Award and The Combustion Institute’s Zeldovich Gold Medal.

Smooke’s primary research interests lie in the areas of computational combustion, chemical vapor deposition, and the numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. His current research projects include computational studies of NOx and soot formation in flames; the modeling of multidimensional premixed and non-premixed flames on parallel supercomputers; flamelet models for turbulent reacting flows; and microgravity combustion.
