"Protein Structure, Cryogenic Electron Microscopy, and Image Processing"
Abstract: Modern cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) offers near-atomic reconstructions of 3d protein structure. Cryo-EM is interesting from an EE point-of-view: at the heart of the method are interesting and open image processing problems. In this talk, I will discuss some of these problems. Special attention will be given to problems that arise in the reconstruction of heterogeneous proteins – proteins whose structure and composition is not fixed. I will discuss some basic theorems and algorithms for reconstructing the structures of these proteins. I will also present reconstructions from real data. Finally, I will discuss some open questions in the field.
Bio: Hemant D. Tagare is a Professor in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at Yale University. His research addresses mathematical and algorithmic problems in biomedical image analysis. For the last eight years, he has worked on problems in cryo-EM. Dr. Tagare obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 1990.
