Introduction to Engineering Innovation & Design (ENAS 118) presentations on MON DEC 11 9:25-10:15 in the CEID:
Soil Core Sampler - Working with researchers from the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, CEID students designed and constructed a compact and efficient method for sampling soil. The device is a component of the Forestry School's carbon mapping project that identifies the carbon footprint of 1,000+ acre Western ranches by extracting 2 feet of soil and then using spectral analysis to determine that area's carbon footprint.
Soil Drying Device - With soil from the first project, a second team of ENAS 118 students designed a process to quickly extract the inherent moisture in the soil such that a standard spectral analysis can be used to identify the carbon content of the sample. The team designed a device that significantly increases the evaporation rate of the embedded water in the soil sample by reducing pressure and increasing temperature.
Ancient Chinese Mirrors - Working with a senior conservator at the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, a team of freshmen envisioned and created a mechanism to illustrate the mechanical aging process on Chinese mirrors. The bronze mirrors (from the Han Dynasty) are a component of the newly reinstalled Ruth and Bruce Dayton Gallery of Asian Art at the YUAG.
