Mark Saltzman Elected To The National Academy of Engineering

02/09/2018

W. Mark Saltzman, Goizueta Foundation Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

Cited for “contributions in drug delivery, biomaterials, and tissue engineering that have led to improved patient treatments,” Saltzman was among 83 new members elected to the academy. He will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE's annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 30, 2018.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.  Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

Jay Humphrey, John C. Malone Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department, said the honor was well-deserved and described Saltzman as an "international leader in innovating safe and effective methods to improve drug delivery using novel polymeric biomaterials and nanoparticle technologies."

"Along with his many colleagues at Yale and beyond, the Department of Biomedical Engineering is extremely proud to congratulate our good friend and colleague, Professor Mark Saltzman, on his very well-deserved election to the National Academy of Engineering," Humphrey said. "This recognition, amongst the highest honors for an engineer in this country, follows soon after his election to the National Academy of Medicine a few years ago. His work has led to the design and implementation of a number of clinical technologies that have become essential to medical practice today, the ultimate goal of every biomedical engineer -- to improve health care."

Saltzman, who is also a member of the Yale Cancer Center, joined the faculty at Yale in 2002 and was appointed founding chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2003. Among other honors, he has received the Dreyfus Foundation Teacher-Scholar Award (1990); the Allan C. Davis Medal (1995); the Professional Achievement Citation in Engineering Award (2013) from Iowa State. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (1997); a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (2010); a Member of the Connecticut Academy of Science & Engineering (2012); a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (2013); and a Member of the US National Academy of Medicine (2014).
