12/07/2021

Electrical engineer Fengnian Xia has been elected as a Fellow of Optica.

Optica’s board of directors elected 106 members from 24 countries to the Society’s 2022 Fellow Class. This year’s cohort reflects a broad and diverse range of achievements in the field of optics and photonics. The new Fellows will be honored at Optica conferences and meetings throughout 2022.

Xia, the Barton L. Weller Associate Professor in Engineering and Science, was named for his “groundbreaking contributions to two-dimensional material photonics and significant achievements in silicon photonics.”

Founded in 1916, Optica is a professional association in optics and photonics, home to accomplished science, engineering, and business leaders from around the world. Through publications, meetings, and membership programs, Optica provides information and interactions on the science of light.

Fellow membership in Optica is limited to no more than 10% of the membership and is reserved for members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics. The fellows are selected based on several factors, including distinguished contributions to education, research, engineering, and business.

“Congratulations to the 2022 Optica Fellows,” said 2021 President Connie Chang-Hasnain. “These members exemplify what it means to be a leader in optics and photonics. Your election, by your peers, confirms the important contributions made within our field. Thank you for your dedication to Optica, and for advancing the science of light.”
