Scholars from six countries and more than two dozen universities and research laboratories will arrive at Yale's campus today to attend the Nineteenth Yale Workshop on Adaptive and Learning Systems, hosted by the Center for Systems Science in the School of Engineering & Applied Science.

Kumpati Narendra, Harold W. Cheel Professor of Electrical Engineering, who has organized the biannual event since 1979, says it has evolved over the 40 years to address the increasingly cross-disciplinary problems found in information and systems sciences.

This year's three-day workshop features nearly 40 speakers in various topics – Neuroscience; Biomolecular Engineering; Human Motor Control; Autonomous Systems; Optimization; Learning; Sharing Economy Analytics; Control; Fractional Order Systems; and Robotics. Papers presented will include brain microcircuits and artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence for policing, and autonomous control of spacecraft swarms in deep space.

The primary objective of the workshop is to bring together scientists and engineers in a collegial environment to discuss critical issues and to exploit the synergism between different viewpoints. Meeting participants will benefit from not only gaining an understanding of how researchers in other fields formulate problems and methods, but also provide many opportunities during the three-day event to network over coffee, food, and wine.
