A Celebration For the Class of 2017
Members of the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science community celebrated the awarding of 178 Engineering degrees on May 22, 2017.
Degrees in Biomedical Engineering were conferred upon 21 members of the class of 2015; in Chemical Engineering, 10 degrees; in Computer Science, 76 degrees; in Electrical Engineering, 18 degrees; in Environmental Engineering, 11 degrees; and in Mechanical Engineering, 36 degrees.
At the departmental convocations, held later in the day, the prestigious Henry Prentiss Becton Prize for Excellence in Engineering and Applied Science was presented to Stan Swidwinski in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Faculty members praised Swidwinski for his exemplary academic record, hiw work ethic and his ingenuity.
“I cannot recall an undergraduate student who is so devoted to his research, and at the same time, so talented and productive in his research output in my nine years at Yale,” wrote Swidwinski’s mentor, Daniel Abadi, a professor of computer science.
Swidwinski’s research focused on a new approach to concurrency control in database systems. Abadi noted that the idea came entirely from Swidwinski, and is likely to prove critical to that field of research.
James Aspnes, director of undergraduate studies for Computer Science, added that Swidwinski “is among the best students we have graduated from CS in all the time I have been here."
