Altman appointed Roberto C. Goizueta Professor of Chemical Engineering
Eric Altman, an innovative, cross-disciplinary scholar who is a leader in the field of chemical engineering, has been appointed the Roberto C. Goizueta Professor of Chemical Engineering, effective immediately.
He is a member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in the School of Engineering & Applied Science.
Since joining the Yale faculty in 1994, Altman has advanced the understanding of the chemical processes that take place on solid surfaces ranging from heterogeneous catalysis to the formation and characterization of novel materials, and has developed new ways to harness and apply those processes. This experimental work cuts across scientific disciplines, and Altman collaborates regularly with colleagues in fields ranging from Applied Physics to Chemistry to Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. He has authored and co-authored dozens of papers that have appeared in Advanced Materials, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Nanoscale Horizons, Journal of Physical Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Physical Review, ACS Nano, and other major peer-reviewed journals across a range of disciplines.
Altman’s novel discoveries in the fields of materials science and chemical engineering have led to his election to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering and the American Vacuum Society. He has held fellowships and grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Energy, the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Foundation, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Office and other organizations. He has delivered keynote addresses at the Gordon Research Conference on Chemical Reactions at Surfaces, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Fritz Haber Institute Max Planck Society, and at universities and conferences around the country and the world.
Altman is also active in shaping the agenda and priorities of his field through his involvement in the American Vacuum Society, where he has served as chair of numerous committees. He served as president of the New England Catalysis Society, and in 2005, played a key role in obtaining NSF funding to establish a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Yale and Southern Connecticut State University in collaboration with the Brookhaven National Laboratory. At Yale, Altman has served as director of graduate studies in engineering and applied science.
