Faculty Leaves
Information regarding faculty leaves is included in the Faculty Handbook.
For detailed procedures for the academic leave process, please refer to the OFAS Leaves and Teaching Relief website.
Once approved, department administrators (chair’s assistant or equivalent) may refer to this Workday Training Guide to process faculty leaves and returns from leave.
Please direct questions to Kristin Flower, Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs (kristin.flower@yale.edu).
Leaves for Tenured Faculty
Faculty should submit a completed Request for Faculty Leave Form (online at https://facultyadmin.yale.edu/faculty-request-leave-or-time-fas-and-seas-2023-24) to their department chair by Monday, November 7, 2022.
Department chairs will review requested leaves and submit forms to OFAS by Tuesday, November 22, 2022. Forms should be submitted in a batch/as 1 combined file to diane.rodrigues@yale.edu. OFAS will send to the SEAS Dean’s Office for approval.
Approvals will be sent from the SEAS Dean’s Office in January-February, 2023.
Leaves for Tenure-Track Faculty
Please refer to the memos sent to SEAS tenure-track faculty and department chairs regarding research leave eligibility for tenure-track faculty on FASTAP2007 and FASTAP2016 and the procedures and deadlines for submitting a pre-tenure leave proposal.
* Please note: the process for non-tenured faculty leave proposals mentioned in the two above memos is managed through Interfolio. When processing the non-tenured faculty leaves in Interfolio, when creating a case, please select the case type Sabbatical.
Faculty should submit their CV and a leave proposal (not to exceed five pages) to their department. Faculty will be notified by the department chair’s assistant (or equivalent) when the case is ready in Interfolio, and given access to complete the Faculty Research Leave Request Form. The Department Review Committee will evaluate each proposal and provide an evaluation and summary to the Department Chair.
Department Chairs will submit their recommendations to the SEAS Dean’s Office by December 1, 2022.
Notification of decisions regarding leave requests will be sent from the SEAS Dean’s Office in January-February, 2023.
Professional Development Leave for Instructional (non-ladder) Faculty
Please refer to the memo sent to SEAS multi-year instructional faculty and department chairs regarding professional development leave eligibility and the procedures and deadlines for submitting a professional development leave proposal.
Faculty should submit their CV, leave proposal, and a completed Request for Faculty Leave Form (available online: https://facultyadmin.yale.edu/faculty-request-leave-or-time-fas-and-seas-2023-24) to their department chair by December 9, 2022.
The department review committee will evaluate each proposal and provide a statement specifying the feasibility and prospective value of the proposed project. The chair will forward endorsed applications to the Office of Faculty Administrative Services (OFAS), care of Diane Rodrigues (diane.rodrigues@yale.edu) and to the SEAS Dean’s Office (seas.facultyaffairs@yale.edu) by January 15, 2023. All endorsed proposals will be reviewed by the SEAS Dean’s Office and the SEAS Teaching Resource Advisory Committee (TRAC).
Notification of decisions regarding leave requests will be sent in the spring.
