Prof. Zucker Named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

Steven Zucker, the David & Lucile Packard Professor of Computer Science & Biomedical Engineering, has been named a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. 

The Royal Society of Canada elected this week the 89 new fellows from various disciplines. They were chosen by their peers in recognition of outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement. 

Zucker was cited for pioneering Canadian interdisciplinary vision science and was described as “its most internationally influential scientist.” 

In an announcement, officials for the Royal Society of Canada wrote:

“His research spans computational vision and visual neuroscience, and his demonstration of how brains (and machines) solve real information processing tasks is pathbreaking. His introduction of differential geometry formalized vision algorithms. By abstracting biological function into mathematical structure, he predicted anatomical connections in the primate brain. Together his theories provide the new standard for vision science.” 

This year's new fellows will be inducted to the academies of the RSC during the Induction and Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the University of Calgary, on Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Fairmont Winnipeg Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
