Chemical reactions at the solid-water interface often control the transport and toxicity of contaminants in natural systems. Understand- ing the mechanisms by which ions react with solids in soils is therefore vital in assessing environmental fate. Molecular-scale spectrosco- py, especially techniques that use synchrotron light, are powerful tools to directly measure mechanisms of chemical reactions in soil samples. Examples of current synchrotron research projects from our laboratory group will be discussed, including results from soft, tender, and hard x-ray spectroscopic techniques at the Canadian Light Source.
