"Adaptation and Control in Modern Radars: A Personal Perspective"

Abstract: There is growing research interest in the problem of closing the radar feedback processing loop at various time scales. This is not the classic feedback problem where a plant is to be controlled. Instead, the objective is to manage the uncertainty about significant objects, using the echoes received from potential targets or the outputs of a tracking system. This presentation reviews these developments from the point of view of a control systems specialist by examining several examples of waveform adaptation.

Biography: Joao B. D. Cabrera received his Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Science from Yale University in 1997. He is currently a Senior Principal Research Engineer with BAE Systems Technology Solutions, responsible for the conception and execution of projects in the general areas of Target Tracking and Sensor Fusion technologies. He was formerly with Scientific Systems Company, where he was instrumental in establishing the Information and Communications group, devoted to the applications of Control Theory and Statistics to problems in communications and computer security.

The Center for Systems Science aims to stimulate scientific interaction among researchers at Yale and elsewhere who are applying systems techniques to theoretical and practical problems. Exploring the relations between current research in the life sciences and systems methodology is also one of the objectives of the seminar series. All are welcome.
